Rippey was sentenced to 60 years, with 10 years suspended due to mitigating circumstances plus 10 years of medium-supervision probation. At the time, Laurie Tackett was the only one of the three that was friends with Melinda Loveless. Loveless and Tackett were sentenced to 60 years in prison at the Indiana Women's Prison in Indianapolis. They picked up two younger associates of Tackett’s 15-year-old Toni Lawrence and 15-year-old Hope Rippey, and then drove from Madison, Indiana to Melinda Loveless’ house in New Albany. One night Melinda gathered a group of friends including: Lauri Tacket, Hope Rippey and Toni Lawrence. This sentence would be reduced to thirty five years on appeal. According to reports in The Courier-Journal, Judge Manier felt Rippey was remorseful and likely to be productive in society. Hope Anna Rippey was born in Madison in June 1976. The public was in shock and demanded quick justice for Shanda. After a short recess, Judge Jourdan sentenced Hope Rippey to the maximum sentence of 60 years, but suspended 10 years for mitigating circumstances, ordering her to be placed on probation for 10 years at the time of her release. By this time, the media were swarming all over the case, and it was making national headlines. Lawrence and two other girls, Hope Rippey, 15, and Mary Laurine Tackett, 17, lured Sharer into Tackett's car on the pretext of going for a joy ride. Hope Ann Rippey On November 3, 2004, Indiana Superior Court Judge Jenny Manier reduced Hope Rippey's prison sentence from 50 to 35 years. Following Loveless and Tackett's hearing, prosecutor Guy Townsend spoke with Hope Rippey's attorney regarding her involvement.
